It is a wonderful thing to be a mentor and make a positive impact in the life of a young person who is in need of a caring adult. It is unfortunate but over 20,000 young people in Pima County have at least one parent incarcerated and Pima County has one of the worst high school graduation rates in the country.

Who can be a mentor in One on One Mentoring?

  1. Must be an adult (18 and older)
  2. Must have a valid social security card
  3. Must be able to pass a state-required Background Check
  4. In most cases you must have available transportation, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance if you drive
  5. May not have been cited for a DUI in the past 2 years.
  6. May not have been involved in a violent crime or a crime against a child.
  7. May not have been charged with the use or distribution of illegal drugs within the past 2 years.

What is required?

  1. To meet with your mentee weekly at least 3 times each month.
  2. To spend an average of at least three hours with your mentee each week.
  3. To report regularly to our office. A form will be provided.
  4. To phone the office if problems arise or there are questions.

What is the process?

  1. Be sure that you have read the information provided on this website.
  2. Fill out and submit the One on One Mentor Application.
  3. Following our receipt of your application with the names of four references, you will be invited to attend a required orientation session. In the event you cannot attend, a private meeting will be arranged. After this meeting, you decide whether you want continue to pursue becoming a mentor.
  4. After the training session, if you still decide to move forward in the process, you will be contacted for a personal interview with a staff member.
  5. At this point you will sign the necessary form(s).
  6. The final step, if you have been accepted, will be to match you up with that special boy or girl who is equally eager to have a mentor.
